Munich, Germany

Munich is the 3rd largest city in Germany and the capital of Bavaria. It is home of world-famous exports such as BMW and FC Bayern soccer team, and of course, it is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebrations and its beer halls. It is also filled with delightful, centuries old buildings, churches and museums.

The Epic things to do in Munich:

  1. Walk the town and see all the sights
  2. Visit a beer garden and go the famous Hofbräuhaus
  3. Enjoy all the Germany food
  4. Take a day trip

Munich is a very walkable city, and public transportation is great, so lace up your walking shoes, buy a pass and get a move on! I suggest starting out at Marienplatz. Here is the ornate New Town Hall, with its famous clock, Rathaus Glockenspiel. The bells will chime, and you will see the “show” at 11 am and noon (depending on the time of year).  Also, here you will see the Old Town Hall, which is actually newer than New Town Hall, due to fire and rebuild. St. Peter’s church, built in 1300, Munich’s oldest church, is here also and for 3 Euros you can climb some 300 steps to a platform for epic views of the city.

There is so much to see that I have broken down some of the top sights into areas of the city:

Dive into the experience of German food – try a German beer, sausage, brat, schnitzel, pretzel, kraut, potato salad, or any of the other items that make German food so distinct and delicious.

Hofbrauhaus Beer

Day Trips – Munich is such a great location and it is easy to go other places, just hop on a train and you are off for another day of discovery.  Some of your choices might include cities in Austria and other cities in Germany. This trip I took two different day trips, one to Neuschwanstein Castle and a half day to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial (which you can more in detail see in my other blog posts).

Public Transportation – use it!

The Underground metro/subway = U-Bahn

Suburban train system that links Munich to the suburbs = S-Bahn

Validate your ticket. 4 zones. Going to Dachau requires XXL ticket and going to the airport requires an Entire Network Ticket. You can get one or multi-day passes, which are good for all forms of transportation. Hauptbahnhof = Central Station

Overall - Munich is a great German city to visit and explore in. It is easy to get around and very walkable. The location is ideal for exploring surrounding areas and cities. You will find a lot to see, do, eat and drink in this epic city!
