Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is the capital of Japan and one of the world’s most populous metropolitan areas. It is a mixture of ultra-modern and traditional. It is history and traditions and home to themed restaurants and quirky fads and places. It is a foodie paradise and it will also be hosting the 2020 Olympics.

Epic things to do in Tokyo:

  • Tsukiji Fish Market
  • Tokyo Skytree
  • Temples
  • Parks
  • Shopping and Dining

Tsukiji Fish Market is my favorite place. You can just feel the traditional Japanese culture and there is so much seafood and other foods for sale. You can have sushi for breakfast or try something local. There are a few old shops that have everything from chopsticks to teapots. Ok – so now there is a new fish market where the tuna auction takes place, but I am told this old market still exists.  Go in the morning as it closes by afternoon.

Tokyo Skytree- stands 634 meters high and has two enclosed observation decks. It is a great view of the city and gives you a better feel for the layout. Also, depending on the clouds and the weather, you can get lucky and see Mount Fuji in the distance. At the base of the tower, there is a large and interesting shopping mall called Solamachi.

Sensoji Temple – Enter through the Thunder Gate and expect crowds of people. It is a popular tourist attraction, but it is also Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple. Enjoy the temple, the surrounding area and the people watching.

Imperial Palace – The Palace itself is in a large, beautiful park. The Palace is only open twice a year, but the gardens are nice to walk through, and it is a great place to see the cherry blossoms in season. There are many beautiful and well-kept parks throughout the city.

Ginza was the former home of a silver coin mint but today is the area for high end shopping and dining.

Shibuya Crossing is considered the busiest intersection in the world. All traffic stops and allows for hundreds of people to cross in all directions

Shinjuku is another popular tourist area for nightlife, karaoke bars, cat cafes and discovering something unusual!

Tips: Use public transportation, walk (and stand on the escalators) on the left. The subways are clean, fast and well run. There is a whole underground system of walkways too. Embrace the food and try something you have never tried and just enjoy the culture.

  1. This is great information and timely. We are planning a trip to Tokyo & Kyoto in October for China’s fall festival. Any chance you’re heading to Japan this fall???
