Vaduz, Liechtenstein

The country of Liechtenstein, nestled between Switzerland and Austria, is the world’s sixth smallest country at just 160 square kilometers (62 square miles) and has a population of 38,400. This double landlocked nation is the only one in the world to be completely located in the Alps and was originally purchased by the princes of Liechtenstein for its political value.

The Capital city is Vaduz and so on our road trip from Switzerland to Germany we had to stop and add this country to our “been there” list. And we were not alone in doing so. The downtown area was filled with tourists, but the city was great about accommodating everyone.  Parking was free and easy, the city was cute, clean and very much geared to tourists.

Epic things to see and do in Vaduz:

1.       Vaduz Castle

2.       Vaduz Cathedral

3.       Liechtenstein Center and Pedestrian Zone

The castle is the palace and official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein, so it is not open to the public. It is visible though, 120 meters above the city and is believed to have been first built in the 12th century as a fortress.

The cathedral is beautiful (and free) so don’t miss peaking inside. A Neo-Gothic church, it was built in 1874.

Stroll through the town and see Town Hall, Government and Parliament buildings, the Postal Museum, Art Museum and the National Museum. Enjoy a meal or a snack, do a little shopping and visit the Liechtenstein Center. At the center, you can put on a paper crown and take a picture on a throne, purchase unique Liechtenstein stamps and souvenirs, and for a small fee, they will also stamp your passport.

Overall – it’s a great place to check out if you are anywhere near the area. A beautiful and quick stop – it is always epic to visit a country for the first time!
